A Balloon–Borne Millimeter–Wave Telescope for Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Measurements

چکیده
We report on the characteristics and design details of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM), a millimeter-wave, balloon-borne telescope that has been used to observe anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) on 0. 5 angular scales. The gondola is capable of determining and maintaining absolute orientation to a few arcminutes during a one-night flight. Emphasis is placed on the optical and pointing performance as well as the weight and power budgets. We also discuss the total balloon/gondola mechanical system. The pendulation from this system is a ubiquitous perturbation on the pointing system. A detailed understanding in these areas is needed for developing the next generation of balloon-borne instruments. Maxima: a Balloon-borne Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Experiment
We describe the Millimeter wave Anisotropy eXperiment IMaging Array (maxima), a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on angular scales of 10 to 5. maxima mapped the CMB using 16 bolometric detectors in spectral bands centered at 150 GHz, 240 GHz, and 410 GHz, with 10 resolution at all frequencies. The combined receiver ...
متن کاملArcheops: a large sky coverage millimeter experiment for mapping Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies
We present Archeops, a balloon-borne bolometer experiment designed to map a large part of the sky at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The main scientific goal is to study the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies on all scales, in order to properly derive the cosmological parameters of the Universe. We present the sky coverage map of the first scientific flight.
متن کاملSPIDER: a Balloon-borne Large-scale CMB Polarimeter
Spider is a balloon-borne experiment that will measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background over a large fraction of a sky at ∼ 1 resolution. Six monochromatic refracting millimeter-wave telescopes with large arrays of antenna-coupled transition-edge superconducting bolometers will provide system sensitivities of 4.2 and 3.1 μKcmb √ s at 100 and 150 GHz, respectively. A rotating ...
متن کاملAnisotropy in the Microwave Sky: Results from the First Flight of Bam
Results are reported from the first flight of a new balloon-borne instrument, BAM (Balloon-borne Anisotropy Measurement), designed to search for cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. The instrument uses a cryogenic differential Fourier transform spectrometer to obtain data in five spectral channels whose central frequencies lie in the range 3.7 cm to 8.5 cm. The spectrometer is coupled ...
متن کاملCosmological constraints from Microwave Background Anisotropy and Polarization
The recent high-quality measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies and polarization provided by ground-based, balloon-borne and satellite experiments have presented cosmologists with the possibility of studying the large scale properties of our universe with unprecedented precision. Here I review the current status of observations and constraints on theoretical models.
